STRATEGIC NATIONAL STOCKPILE (SNS)
NACCHO developed this document using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Receiving, Distributing, and Dispensing the National Pharmaceutical Stockpile, A Guide for Planners (Version 9) as a framework. The document is a companion document to supplement Version 9.

The Kentucky Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) Communication Guide was created to assist state and local public health and public information officers in their response to a public emergency. This guide is specifically meant to serve as a resource in case of an event occurring in Kentucky that requires the deployment of the SNS. A public health emergency will require communication among all responding agencies as well as public information for the media and affected Kentucky citizens.

This guide is a living document. It is anticipated that as new press releases, fact sheets, message maps, scripts and other materials are located or developed by state or local public health and public information officials, they will be compiled and included as a resource for the entire state's emergency communication community.

A pandemic influenza annex was recently added to assist in the event of an influenza pandemic.

The documents listed below can be customized to include your local health department contact information. Save the customized documents to your computer to have them ready for emergencies.

The Strategic National Stockpile - What it Means to You

CDC's Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) has large quantities of medicine and medical supplies to protect the American public if there is a public health emergency (terrorist attack, flu outbreak, earthquake) severe enough to cause local supplies to run out. Once Federal and local authorities agree that the SNS is needed, medicines will be delivered to any state in the U.S. within 12 hours. Each state has plans to receive and distribute SNS medicine and medical supplies to local communities as quickly as possible.

What should you know about the medicines in the SNS?
The medicine in the SNS is FREE for everyone.
The SNS has stockpiled enough medicine to protect people in several large cities at the same time.
Federal, state and local community planners are working together to ensure that the SNS medicines will be delivered to the affected area to protect you and your family if there is a terrorist attack.
